Jazz has always intimidated me, and I'd blame the people around me, musicians who are so dang protective about its purity, its rigor, its legends and its membership... defensive about un-sanctioned misfits, but actually what really scares me is how unnatural its groove pattern always felt.
So I decided to tackle this Jazz Bible of Coordination left in my drum studio by Chris.
I don’t know what I'm doing, to be clear, This is probably the opposite of jazz, but I like jazz. Both those things can be true. And while playing my own version of quote groovy combinations last night I felt communion with god, and I decided once again--I really like the awful way I play my drums.
So this is a motivational video, actually. If you happen to catch it--consider it a prompt. I dare you to play your drums, but play them poorly. Even a shitty lick is better than none.
